Project Description
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the beloved father Atticus Finch famously encourages his daughter Scout to try to see things from other people’s points of view, to “climb into (their) skin and walk around in it.” All too often we focus on what we see immediately when considering other’s perspectives, forgetting that there is a large world around us and a history that tails behind our every move. During this project will we examine the craft of writing a work of historical fiction while reading To Kill a Mockingbird and excerpts from the recently released Go Set a Watchman. Additionally, students will choose a book with similar themes to read with a book club. These readings will guide students towards writing their own work of fiction based on a character’s journey in To Kill a Mockingbird. This writing will require you to step into another’s skin by doing significant research about the world they lived in and what it might be like for someone in their position.
